You spend all your time trying to make your app perfectly accurate. But eventually, your app is going to guess wrong. It will suggest a bad meeting time. It will put a file in the wrong folder. It will get confused.
When your app messes up, your user doesn’t immediately hate you. They only hate you if the mistake is hard to fix.
The real reason people churn
Think about autocorrect on your phone. When it changes your word to something embarrassing, it is annoying. But you don’t throw your phone away, because fixing it is effortless. You just hit backspace.
Now imagine if fixing an autocorrect mistake required you to open your phone settings, dig through three menus, find a dictionary file, and manually delete the word. You would uninstall the keyboard immediately.
Users don’t leave because your app made a mistake. They leave because it was a nightmare to fix.
The cheat code: The Undo button
Stop hiding the “No thanks” button. Stop making users dig through settings to fix a bad categorization.
If your app does something automatically, there must be a massive, obvious button right next to it that says “Undo.”
If a user clicks “Undo,” fix the mistake instantly. Don’t ask them to fill out a feedback form. Just revert the action and let them move on.
Make your app easy to forgive, and your users will stay forever.
