You want your app to feel smart. You track how your users behave in the background, and then you use that data to automatically suggest things to them. You expect them to be amazed.
Instead, they cancel their subscription.
Why? Because your app doesn’t feel smart. It feels like a stalker.
The creepiness line
When a user gives you information directly—like filling out a profile—they expect you to use it. That builds trust.
But when your app tracks them in secret and then suddenly proves it knows their habits, it crosses a line. Users don’t think, “Wow, this app is so helpful.” They think, “What else is this thing tracking behind my back?”
Once a user feels spied on, they are gone. They won’t send a support ticket. They will just delete your app.
The cheat code: Tell them why
You don’t have to stop building smart features. You just have to stop keeping secrets.
If your app is going to make a smart suggestion based on a user’s habits, you must tell the user exactly how you know that information.
Instead of popping up a message that says, “You should do X,” change it to say: “Since you did Y three times this week, do you want to try X?”
It is that simple. When you explain the “why,” you stop looking like a spy and start looking like a helpful assistant. Be transparent, and your users will stay.
